Sash window maintenance
Why it is important to maintain your sash windows and what is required
Sash window maintenance
Like every other part of your home, your sash windows require maintenance to ensure that they continue functioning at their best to keep your house warm in winter and cool in summer.
Unfortunately, window maintenance is often overlooked once the windows have been installed. This often results in rot or decay, increased draughts and outdoor noise, and windows that won’t open easily or won’t open at all.
All of which makes your windows more expensive, as a result of higher heating bills, and frustration at their inefficiency.
But don’t worry, we can fix all of this as we’ve been repairing and hand-painting sash windows since 1988!
What does window maintenance involve?
1. Painting your windows
The main and most important part of maintaining your windows is periodic painting of your windows. By painting your windows, especially before the paint begins to peel and flake from the weather and time, it reduces any deterioriation of your windows and can extend their lifespan.
Our skilled painters are specifically trained in how to paint sash windows correctly!
Unlike most painters, they begin by taking the sashes out of the window frames. They then strip and sand the paint from both of them. Once this is completely, they paint them both separately.
Painting them both separately is extremely important as it prevents them from being painted shut (which is a common problem we encounter frequently) and also ensures they slide up and down easily. It also prevents the draught-proofing from being damaged. If the draught-proofing is damaged then it results in, you guessed it, draughts!
2. Intensive maintenance
There may be signs of decay or rot if your windows haven’t been painted or maintained in a number of years. Our skilled team can repair or replace any areas of rot. The sooner this is done after any rot or decay is identified, the better, as it stops further decay of your sash windows and makes them last for longer. If the decay or rot is advanced, then the sash or the window frame may need to be replaced.
Once our skilled team have finished any repairs to your windows, they will:
- Strip and hand-paint your sashes and window frames
- Fit a new draught-proofing system
- Replace your sash cords
- Rebalance the weights
- Replace staff beads & parting beads
- Repairing or replacing frames and sashes
- Ensuring easy sliding action
We can assure you that you will be totally satisfied with the end result!
